In his home country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 22 year old Carole Machumu is a famous professional football goalkeeper. When the ongoing civil war claimed his father’s life and tore apart the rest of his family, he was forced to flee to South Africa.
Here, however, with his refugee status, he is not allowed to proceed with his professional career and has to work as a car guard in order to survive. Until his dream of becoming a world-class goalkeeper for Europe, America or Asia comes true, he plays for the amateur club Camps Bay FC to stay in shape.
‘After the War’ is the fourth episode of the five-piece ‘Soccer for Life’ series. It was published by the German Football Association (DFB) as well as 11freunde.de and taz.de.
‘After the War’ won the 2010 Deutscher Reporterpreis in the Best Web Reportage category.
