Forerunners soulfully explores what it means to be black and middle class in South Africa today. At the frontier of unprecedented social change, Miranda, Mpumi, Martin and Karabo are part of the first generation of black South Africans to rise from poverty and join the country’s ‘middle class’.
I shot this documentary with director Simon Wood in the second half of 2010. It was screened in a wide variety of film festivals worldwide, including the International Documentary Festival in Amsterdam (IDFA) as well as the United Nations Association Film Festival in San Francisco, where it was awarded the prize for Best Cinematography, and the Pan African Film Festival in Cannes, where it won the Dikalo Special Jury Award.
